How do I prepare for yoga class?
- Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move, breathe, and bend unrestrained.
- Bring your own yoga mat and remember that a sticky mat is helpful since yoga is typically done in bare feet.

- Yoga is not competitive. Don't worry if you're not as flexible as other people in the class. With a little practice and patience you will soon improve.
So what is yoga exactly?
Yoga originated in India many years ago. The word yoga is derived from the Sanskrit word meaning union. This is typically interpreted as the union between body, mind, and spirit. Yoga is a system of asanas (postures) that are performed with great awareness of the breath.
It is this focus on the breath that makes yoga different from other exercise. By being mindful of the breath, you can pay attention to how you feel both mentally and physically. This awareness enables you to bring the body and mind into alignment.

I've never tried yoga; will I be able to participate in the class?
Yes! Our certified instructors teach to all levels. More than 50% of our students are beginners. Don't worry if you find a pose challenging or feel that you are not doing it properly. Your flexibility, stamina, and body alignment will improve with practice. First listen to your body and do not force yourself into an uncomfortable posture. Second, always let your instructor know if you have any health conditions or injuries that may limit your ability to perform a posture.
I'm not flexible; can I still practice yoga?
Remember even iron can bend.
Increased flexibility is the outcome of yoga. It doesn't matter if you've never been able to touch your toes. You will improve with practice.
Always listen to your body, and remember that yoga is not competitive. If you feel uncomfortable in a pose do not push beyond your body's current limit.
I'm out of shape, is it safe for me to start practicing yoga?
Yoga is a method of harmonizing the mind and body. People begin practicing yoga for a variety of reasons: to enhance physical fitness, increase energy, and improve self-awareness and peace of mind. If you have been inactive for a long period of time, sidelined for health reasons, or any other causes, yoga is the perfect way to increase your physical activity.
Meditation, what's that?
Meditation is the simultaneous action of relaxing the body and focusing the mind. This enables one to calm the mind, relax and release tension from the body, deepen concentration and insight, balance the emotions, develop spiritually, and reduce stress and anxiety. Meditation has been used by all religions since ancient times for spiritual growth. Recently, interest in meditation has increased in the West, as it is a valuable tool for finding stress relief and relaxation in a fast-paced, modern world.
How is meditation used during Mindful Revolution's Yoga classes?
A guided meditation will be used during the class in three different ways.
At the beginning of yoga class your instructor will ask you to ‘set an intent' for the entire class. This intent may be a short statement ("I am happy," "I am learning," "I am relaxed", etc.) or a longer statement ("I forgive myself for my mistakes today," "I am letting go of my fear of trying something new," etc.). This intent will be the focus of your yoga practice for that day.
Throughout class you will also be asked to bring awareness to your breath. Focusing on the breath enables you to focus the mind on the present moment and also enables you to stay relaxed through more strenuous poses.
Lastly, during Savasana (final relaxation), your instructor will guide you through a relaxation meditation that will enable your body to cool down and revitalize you at the end of class.
